Greg Broderick made a triumphant return to the national circuit when winning the thirteenth leg of the TRM/Horseware National Grand Prix League at Balmoral Park. Partnering Noel Cawley’s Golden Exchange, Broderick ensured the journey north was worthwhile when coming out in front in Tuesday’s €4,000 feature class at the National Balmoral Championships, kindly sponsored by the SHS Group and the Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council.
International course designer Frank Glynn set the challenge for a large starting field of 52 which saw 23 return to contest the jump-off. Drawn at the middle of the clocked round, Broderick held the lead with a clear round in a time of 38.12 despite tense moments provided by strong challenges that saw the top three placings separated by only fractions of a second.
Speaking after the class Broderick said, “Golden Exchange has a lot of scope which means I can afford to turn back really tight to oxers. I got a really good turn back to fence three and to the double which is where I think I found the time.”
Broderick returns from international duty which saw successful performances in the Nations Cup at Lummen, La Baule and St. Gallen as well as a podium finish at the Global Champions Tour in Estoril with MHS Going Global. The Tipperary rider now intends to compete at Tattersalls and South County show before heading to Dublin, again part of the Irish team.
Dean Rogan, showed the form that saw him win the opening round of the Jumping in the City series to secure the runner-up position. Partnering the Toulon-sired Falco Van Spieveld, Rogan came within striking distance of Broderick’s time but proved fractionally off the mark when the clock stopped at 38.23 while Gerard Clarke proved a breath behind when taking Rafiki across the line in 38.25.
The pace slowed significantly for fourth place with Nicola Fitzgibbon recording 40.45 with Poker des Dames. Neal Fearon slotted neatly into fifth with the FT Showjumpers owned eight-year-old Cessina logging a steady clear in a time of 46.93 while Stacey Babes supplied the only other fault free round in the jump-off with Caius.
