Peter Smyth Wins the final leg and Vincent Byrne is crowned Champion of the Horseware/ TRM National Grand Prix League

Four days of Top class show jumping have taken place this weekend at Barnadown in Co. Wexford at the Irish Breeders Classic Show.

The action on Saturday focussed on the final of the Horseware/TRM National Grand Prix with a prize fund of €4000 sponsored by Equine International Shipping and ShowjumpingIreland.  It was a hotly contested competition as the League title was still very much up for grabs.  Alexander Butler led going into the final with Vincent Butler and Greg Broderick hot on his heels.

56 starters took on Tom Holden’s track for the final and 13 combinations went through to the jump off.  The long journey south from County Tyrone paid off for Peter Smith.  The 11 year old brown mare by Limmerick Victoria Rose pulled out all the stops to take a well deserved first place with a double clear in 42.82.  Vincent Byrne put in a faultless round in 45.26 to take second position with Hannibal V Overis Z, this secured the League title for the 25 year old Kilkenny native.  A beaming Vincent accepted his prize from Lorraine McGuinness of Horseware and TRM representative Eoin Thompson.

James Weldon's 10 year old Gelding by ARD VDL Douglas, Mr Rockefeller, showing notable good form with five wins in the league took the leading horse title.

Sunday’s action started with the final of the Leinster Summer Tour sponsored by Shires Equestrian Products.  Francis Connors and Oilean Uno took the class with a double clear in 23.66 with Greg Broderick and Rincoola Black Adder double clear in 24.09.  Third in the Class was Peter Smyth with Admiran Cassio clear in a time of 24.18 and this was enough to give Peter the overall League title.

The final of the Irish Breeders Classic 5 & 6 Year old class attracted a large crowd of spectators to see 25 of the cream of young Irish Showjumpers contest the €39,400 Prize Fund raised by the Irish Breeders Classic team.

Five five year old and five six year olds made it through to the Jump off.  All the favourites were through and it was a hotly contested jump off. Francis Connors was the only person to get two horses through to the jump off.

In the five year old section Declan Egan with CSF Mr. Kroon laid down the challenge with a blistering round in 41.79, a time that looked almost unbeatable.

It was Alexander Butler with the six year old Talks Cheap that took on the challenge and with a super clear in 39.76 took the 2014 Irish Breeders Classic title.

The four days were rounded off with a sale of elite foals which followed the supreme sale of showjumpers which had taken place on Friday evening at a gala dinner.  Ard Ginger Pop topped the sale making €95,000 for Sharon Fitzpatrick while Irish Breeders Classic Winner Talks Cheap sold by Hannah Joyce made €50,000.  Both horses were purchased by Carl Hanley and Enda Carroll.
