Vincent Byrne took his second victory to date in the Horseware/ TRM National Grand Prix League when claiming the eighth leg in Charleville aboard Mr. Rockefeller.
The penultimate rider in an 11-horse decider, Byrne took every risk to dislodge then leading Liam O’Meara from pole position recording a faultless time of 41.44 seconds. The maximum ten points on offer for the win in the €5,000 class, sponsored by Dick’s Supervalu Charleville, sees Byrne now sitting in second place on the league leader board.
The 2014 National Grand Prix League title holder, Byrne has already shown good form in the league this season with the 12-year-old Ard VDL Douglas-sired Mr. Rockefeller triumphing in Thomastown back in May as well as recently finishing fourth in both Ballivor and Galway County Show.
O’Meara had set a benchmark of a clear round in a time of 41.87 with Mr. Coolcaum and as the final rider in the jump-off with his second mount Curraghgraigue Jack Take Fligh looked determined to reclaim the lead. O’Meara succeeded in bettering the time, crossing the line in a blistering show of pace to stop the clock at 40.12 but a single error saw him slip down the line-up to eventual fifth place.
Francis Connors made it triple handed to the clocked round but kept a clean sheet only with the nine-year-old daughter of Harlequin Du Carel, Lates Du Carel. His time of 44.47 would guarantee the yellow rosette.
Seamus Hayes was the only other competitor to supply a faultless round on his second outing. Riding the Quidam de Revel-sired Barichello W, Hayes logged a time of 47.26. Gerard O’Neill completed the top six with Isacorada, four faults in 42.91. O’Neill, active in the league with two outright wins aboard Dondoctro Ryal K now occupies the top spot on the leader board at this early stage.
